"Great importance is attached to the children's environment to ensure it is attractive, welcoming and safe. It is decorated with restful, calm colours and textures in order that children can focus on their activity without visual distraction. The furniture is made of solid maple and wherever possible, equiment is made of wood and other natural materials in order to enhance children's sensory and aesthetic experiences. The homely kitchen allows children to cook and eat together.

The Moorland Childhood Centre is set in a safe, secure garden overlooked by Dartmoor foothills and outdoor activity is an important part of the children's experience.

As well as physical play, there is a kitchen garden where children sow, tend and harvest their own fruit and vegetables. Fruit trees allow children to observe seasonal changes at first hand and mature trees with hanging boughs create magical hideaways. The fenced pond area, bird tables and nesting boxes allow children to observe wildlife at close quarters."

Children work in a variety of areas throughout the session - individually, in pairs, small groups and whole group activities. These activities can be self-chosen, child - initiated or adult - initiated.
